Officials discuss West Point Village sign use

UPPER GWYNEDD – Commissioners on Tuesday discussed allowing the West Point Preservation Group to use the township right of way to place signs welcoming travelers to West Point Village.

Commissioners approved the concept of the signs but told township Manager Len Perrone to get more information from the preservation group about where exactly they would place the signs.

“They need to determine what’s the cost of shipping and where do you recommend you put them?” said commissioners Chairman James Santi. “Conceptually‚ I have no problem with this. It’s probably a nice-looking sign from the definition of it.”

Perrone also said the group would need permission from Montgomery County to place signs in the right of way along West Point Pike because it’s a county road.

The group‚ formed last fall‚ makes recommendations for the direction of revitalization in West Point‚ considered by members of the group and township officials as a historically important area of Upper Gwynedd.

Ultimately‚ some of the group’s recommendations will be included in the township’s comprehensive plan.

The first aspect of revitalization in West Point was the installation of green-colored traffic signal standards at the intersection of West Point Pike and Garfield Avenue‚ a project that was finished in July.

The group also has discussed streetscape improvements.

The group‚ which attends the preservation group’s meetings‚ would like four signs to be placed at four gateways to the area‚ including two on West Point Pike‚ one on Park Road and one on Garfield Avenue‚ according to Perrone.

The signs‚ as depicted in a sketch‚ would be highly ornamental in a Victorian style‚ made of wrought iron with bronze letters.

Each sign would cost $1‚985 before shipping and installation.

Commissioner E. Clare Edelmeyer said the total cost for the signs could be much more than about $2‚000.

“You’re looking at upwards of $10‚000‚” Edelmeyer said.

Perrone said the group has fund-raising mechanisms in place for the signs but may approach the township for some help.
